WHO SHOULD PROOFREAD YOUR WORK?
ANYONE BUT YOU.
It’s not your fault; it’s the way your brain is primed to see what you think you wrote or intended to write.
You’re the author. As such, you’ve been involved in every step of the process. After coming up with the idea, creating an outline, and wading through multiple rounds of revisions and editing, once the time for proofreading comes along, you’re too close to the text to proofread it accurately.
It would be best to have someone else for the final proofreading pass because a fresh set of eyes will see everything you can’t.
A PROOFREADER…
… should be the final eyes looking at a project.
… is looking for items that have been missed in previous editorial passes.
… reads the document, finds document errors, marks document errors, and returns the document.
… works on typos, double words, punctuation, grammar, spelling, and formatting issues.
… can proofread for authors, bloggers, college students, journalists, web content creators, scriptwriters, transcriptionists, podcasters, and more!
A PROOFREADER DOES NOT…
… work on plot, setting, overall structure, character development, adding/deleting/rearranging scenes or content.
… work on a project’s introduction and ending.
… work on dialogue, phrasing, refining characterizations, hooks and prompts, overused dialogue tags or consistency.
… fact-check.
… double-check the table of contents, footnotes, or bibliography.
… ensure the timeline is accurate.
… check chapter and page numbers are correctly numbered.
(The above are completed during stylistic/content editing and copyediting. A proofreader is provided the author’s work once editing has been completed.)
